A caulescent form, with reddish leaves and white flowers, traded as "variety rubra."
Widespread from Cuba to Argentina, it is very hardy in New Zealand. Prefers cool nights to flower well, and soon forms attractive clumps. Closely related to Tillandsia araujei. (the so-called "Rubra" form of tenuifolia is particularly close to T. araujei).
Called "qaqa (rock) huicunto" by the local Quechua peoples. (Rios A. & Khan, 1998)
