Similar to Tillandsia cyanea, but more cold tolerant. It grows naturally in Ecuador and Peru, epiphytically at around 1200m altitude in Andean forests with cool nights. According to L.B. Smith, plants with longer flower stems come from Peru, those with shorter stems from Ecuador.
