Comes from Mexico and Costa Rica where it grows epiphytically on oaks and pines in moist cloud forests at 1800 to 2900 m. altitude (Padilla, 1973, Smith & Downes 1977). It likes bright sunny conditions, can be difficult to grow in very warm climates.
Closely related to Tillandsia erubescens and Tillandsia macdougallii.
