This plant comes from seed supplied by the Bromeliad Society in May, 1990. It was labelled "Aechmea recurvata variety tokurii" - which is a name we have not heard of. Aechmea recurvata is supposed to have red flowers, and only the variety recurvata has the inflorescence fully protruded from the leaves - in AF90051, 5cm of the flower stalk is visible above the leaves by the time flowering has finished...
Aechmea recurvata varieties have been grown in New Zealand gardens for many years, most of them coloring up brilliantly when flowering.
