Also known as Tillandsia feldhofii.
One of our seedling batches.
From Oaxaca and Chiapas in Mexico. Often confused with Tillandsia matudae, also from Mexico and possibly Guatemala (see below). In T. velickiana the primary bracts exceed the inflorescence(well, at least the floral bracts) whereas in T. matudae they are well short of he floral bracts. Also, we have found that in T. matudae the inflorescence is usually compound and the petals white, whereas in T. velickiana the inflorescence is simple and the petals always violet/purple.
To complicate matters, there is also a plant sold in Guatemala as "Tillandsia oaxacana" that has been said to be Tillandsia feldhoffii (Kiff, 1991) (which is now officially recognized as T. velickiana). To make things worse, we have imported "T. oaxacana" from Guatemala and, because the first ones to flower for us seemed to be more like T. matudae, we sell it as T. matudae Guatemala AB631. Later flowerings from this lot appear closer to T. velickiana!!! Perhaps it is an intermediate population, at this stage we are not sure so we will leave it as it is.
