The batch in our sales catalogue, grown from seed sown in 1989 and flowering for the first time in 2004.
Comes from El Salvador, in cloud forests around lake margins at 1300 to 1640m. I
t grows well in our heated growing-on house in shaded spots, and also is quite happy in the shade-house. But it is very susceptible to leaf-tip die-back in our sales greenhouse which is a bit hotter and drier than the growing-on house. So it needs a reasonably cool, humid atmosphere in cultivation, similar, presumably, to its native habitat. In our warm, dry summers growth comes to a standstill during the hot weather, particularly with younger seedlings.
