From Rio de Janeiro, in cultivation it likes bright, fairly dry conditions.
Its natural habitat is on rocky cliffs on the mainland as well on islands where it grows in dense populations. Vegetatively similar to Tillandsia araujei, in flower it is close to Tillandsia stricta (Leme, 1987).
