The species was originally reported to inhabit dry areas of Venezuela, Colombia, Brazil, Trinidad at 200-400 m. (Padilla, 1973).
The variety rupicola, however, has only been found on Cabo Island (near Rio de Janeiro) growing on rocky walls sometimes washed by the sea. Its habitat overlaps with the more widespread Tillandsia neglecta. (Leme, 1987)
