Pochutla is near the southern coast of Mexico, below Oaxaca.
Comes from Mexico, Cuba, Guatemala, Honduras and the Dominican Republic. It has a wide range geographic and altitudinal, being found from near sea level to 2,500 meters. The Dominican population is sufficiently different to be given a variety name of its own, T. capitata var. domingensis, and grows only on one limestone rock, El Penon (Werner Rauh, Journal of the Bromeliad Society International, July-August 1982 page 170)
